LeagueTennis.com Newsletter
February 2008/ Issue 5

Winter leagues are under way with almost 2000 players participating in the various leagues and many more anticipated for Spring! We have a few openings due to injuries/withdrawals, so please check our list below if you missed the deadline!

Atlanta singles and Houston / Dallas doubles will be ending soon and players will compete for the coveted City Champion Title! If you are playing in one of these leagues, be sure to mark yourself available on the My Schedule page if you plan to play.

Many of our Spring Leagues are open for registration. All Spring leagues are only $5 (that's $20 off the regular price)! Spring is one of the best seasons to play tennis so don't miss out on the fun :)

And don't forget to to tell your friends and family about our leagues and have them sign up with you as a referral. We have players who have already referred enough friends that they will play free every season their friends do!!

Some of us will be heading to the Pacific Life Open in a few weeks to watch some great tennis and hope that it will rub off on us somehow! There simply is nothing better than planning a vacation around a professional tournament! Our Texas players don't have to go far to find a GREAT professional tournament so be sure to visit the US Clay Court Championships at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX starting April 14th . Fantastic tennis in a storybook setting--just doesn't get any better than that!

Tennis Serve: Tips and tricks of The Proper Tennis Serve

Stand side on to the court, hold the ball between thumb and first two finger tips and toss the ball a little higher then the high point that you can hold your racquet up to. On the toss I tell my clients to picture the your self as the Statue of Liberty and toss the ball at the highest point that you can hold up your toss hand up to and release the ball like you might let go of a small bird.

One thing to watch out for is not to stretch to far and simply toss the ball about 8-10 inches in front of your front foot. For the Right handed tennis player picture a giant clock in the sky and toss the ball at 1:00 or off the right post for both the Deuce or the AD side of the court. For the lefty tennis player just the opposite, toss the ball at left post or at a giant clock, this time 11:00. I like to finish my tennis server like a Football quarterback where again for the Righty the right foot should follow the right arm over finishing into the tennis court.

LeagueTennis.com is excited to announce the first winner of our 2008 Good Sportsmanship Award, Michael Sims of Lilburn, Georgia! Michael has been accused of bending over backwards to accomodate an opponent's multiple reschedules due to illness :) Michael will receive a 1 year subscription to Tennis Life Magazine for being such a good sport!

We want to stress to all of our players that Good Sportsmanship is critical to the success of our leagues. So please keep this in mind and don't let a moment of anger of frustration result in days of feeling badly about how you acted on the courts :)

So if you experience a notable case of Good Sportsmanship while participating in our leagues--WE WANT TO KNOW! Just send us an email at support@leaguetennis.com with the details along with the names of the players involved! We will highlight the winners in our monthly newsletters and on our Website!

This is a fantastic, easy to make, hard to mess up soup!! This recipe was submitted by a veteran of the game, Susie Stuck from Atlanta, Georgia :) If you play tennis and have an incredible recipe you want to share, send it to support@leaguetennis.com.

2-3 cans chicken broth

2-3 cans beef broth (this determines how much you want to make. Make a lot because it freezes well.)

2 tsp - minced garlic
2 tsp - oregano
2-3 - baking potatoes, diced
1-2 - cans diced tomatoes, with its tomato juice
3-5 - cans of varying beans that you like (navy, lima, field peas, etc.)
Onion to taste, minced. (I’ve never put this in, but if you love onion, I would)
Pepper to taste
Do not salt, the beans should provide enough

Simmer on low until potatoes are cooked.

1 bunch KALE - Remove the stems, just using the leafy parts and cut them up into business-card sized pieces. SET ASIDE

1 Smoked Sausage - Slice a smoked sausage into diced pieces and sauté until browned. Add them just before serving to get the best flavor. SET ASIDE

When the potatoes are cooked, add the kale and cook for another 15-20 minutes, just until it’s cooked. Add the smoked sausage. Enjoy.

It is impossible to cook this soup improperly. You can change the quantities of each ingredient and it will simply be more or less brothy. If you want carrots or celery or twice the smoked sausage or garlic in it, do it. The important thing is to use ingredients that you like. Oh, and absolutely serve with cornbread!
